When it comes to choosing between an iPad or Android tablet, the decision might be tough. Apart from the different device models produced by each brand, they also have their own pros and cons. In order to make this decision slightly easier for you, we’ve compiled the strengths and weaknesses of both below:
iPad
Strengths:
One of the biggest perks of the iPad is the iPhone/iPad ecosystem. This includes the App Store, which has a huge range of apps, most of which are designed with the iPad’s larger display in mind. The ecosystem also includes accessories, which go beyond just external speakers, tablet cases, and wireless keyboards. You can do anything from hooking your guitar to the device to converting it into a miniature coin-operated arcade game (without the need for quarters).
The iPad is also easier to use and more stable when compared to an Android tablet. Apple approves each app individually, ensuring that the worst of bugs are eliminated, and it does what it claims. Even though Android is making great strides in becoming more user-friendly, Apple’s devices are usually less overwhelming and simpler.
Weaknesses:
The trade-off is having lesser ability to expand and fewer customization options. While each app is approved individually and users know that it’s harder for malware to attack their device, this process locks out some apps that could be useful.
Another drawback is that the iPad’s storage can’t be expanded using microSD cards. Other options like Dropbox and iCloud can be used, but the lack of support for Flash drives and microSD is a definite negative.
Android:
Strengths:
One of the biggest perks of Android is how much you can customize your tablet once you purchase it. What’s more, you also have a vast range of devices that you can choose from. Over the last few years, Android has also matured quite a bit, supporting some features that Apple has stayed away from, like widgets.
The Google Play marketplace has also made great progress in the last few years. Even though the lack of supervision implies that more of these apps will be thrown away without much use, the boost in numbers provides more variety than earlier.
Weaknesses:
One of the biggest downsides to Android is the lack of supervision over Google Play. You might know what to expect when you download well-known apps like Hulu Plus or Netflix, but when you download a new app, you’ll never know what you’ll get.
The wide range of devices is an advantage when shopping, but in terms of support, it can be a disadvantage. Not all Android operating systems are compatible with all devices, and it might be difficult for developers to identify bugs on all supported devices. This can cause stability problems in some apps.
